BEFORE THE BOOK THERE WAS EAT TIME

At this point half the civilized world knows that Robb Wolf has written a book.  But did you know that he also produced a DVD?

Three winters ago this December we had Robb and Nicki leave the warm comfortable NORCAL winter to experience a version of winter done Kansas style. It pretty much snowed the whole three days while the high temperature stayed around 10 degrees with no Sunshine.

In this DVD done documentary style,  you will learn the success formula necessary to improve your athletic performance, improve you body composition, have greater energy, and optimize your grocery shopping experience and the value of nutrient timing. The foods, the preparation, the shopping experience (and let me tell you it was an experience) and mystery of implementing a uniform eating routine will be addressed in this DVD.

The whole experience was outstanding as usual. I’ll save the stories about over done espresso machines, massive snow fall and near misses with the management of the grocery for another time. If you long for information and entertainment you’ll like watching.

Ambien Zombies

A month ago I witnessed a client involved in an automobile accident.  Thankfully everyone was okay.  The driver of the other vehicle clearly ran a red light.  Folks chase lights and even I on occasion will catch an orange one.

I learned this week that the driver of the other car was under the influence of sleeping pills.  It got me thinking about how many kinds of pills are available for a variety of aliments and conditions.  We’ve got pills to get us going in the morning, pills to knock us out at night and when the mode strikes us if nature doesn’t work~ get it up.

The more you dig into sleeping pill usage you learn that there are some serious issues.  We are turning into a nation of Ambien Zombies.  There have been some pretty high profile Zombies to date as well.  The use of sleeping pills in the United States alone has risen over 138% in four years.  Sales of sleeping pills has a total value over 4 billion dollars.

I place sleep hygiene at the bottom of the health pyramid.  No matter how zealous you are with your health and fitness approach you must rest.  This is so critical to your overall health.  Name the aliment and you will likely also find a critical link to poor sleep history.

Your bedroom should be used for two things and one of them is sleep. (BTW the second thing is not watching Soprano’s season II.)

Getting a good nights sleep like many things involves habits.  Routine is critical.

1. Go to bed at the same time and wake at the same time. Your target is 7 hours as a minimum.  Do the math.  This usually means that you need to be in bed asleep by 10:00 pm.  No excuses about waiting up for kids.  The inmates do not run the prison.  FYI~ Young teenagers should be logging 9 hours per night.  There bodies are a raging hormonal storm.  Lack of sleep combined with a highly processed high carbohydrate diet is a recipe for disaster.

2. Make sure your room is dark. Cover the windows and the alarm panel.  Anything that lets light in should be blacked out.

3. Leave you cell phone in another room and turn it off. For the love of God tell your mother in law or anyone else not to call the house after 10 pm unless the world is ending.  It can wait.

4. Formulate a bedtime ritual.  Here’s a suggestion….1. Keep the light low and turn of the stupid box (TV) for roughly 1 hour before bed. 2. Take a hot shower or bath or hot tub. 3. Put on your bed clothing.  4. Brush and floss your teeth. 5. Don’t go to bed angry.  Whatever happened during the day save it for tomorrow but don’t be angry.

5.  Watch caffeine intake late in the day or evening. This goes for alcohol too.  A little alcohol might help but we are taking about 4 oz of red wine with dinner.  Alcohol as it wears off will become disruptive to sleep rhythms early in the morning.

6. Heavy meals and excessive carbohydrate intake can be distributive. You’ll crash but then wake up with heartburn or just be uncomfortable.

You can also do a little SLEEP CAMP study to optimize your sleep.  A non pharmaceutical approach might include a bit of  ZMA and or Magnesium Calm for your nocturnal bliss.

Why are we still talking about this?

Last evening the opportunity arose during warm up to discuss supplementation. I started off with my basic macro nutrient requirements regarding protein and fat intake. I then proceeded to quiz a couple of new students about their fish oil intake. To my surprise only 1 in 3 supplemented with fish oil and even then the dose was insanely low.

Fish Oil comes as close to a miracle food as we have at this point. If a pharmaceutical company is willing to toss their hat into the ring then the upside potential cure and financial gain is hugh. Studies have proven that high concentrations of fish oil can be used to dramatically reduce inflammation, resulting in weight loss, improved blood chemistry and better overall health. More clinical research has shown that fatty acids, even when used to supplement a very poor diet, can help lower the risk of heart disease, cancer, MS, bipolar depression, ADHD, chronic pain and Alzheimer’s—all because fish oils reduce inflammation

The good folks at The Whole 9 have gone to the trouble of putting together a fish oil consumption calculator with the help of Biochemist/Coach and author Robb Wolf.

If you are a complete metabolic train wreck you’ll notices the results rather quickly.  If you are typically healthy but a little stressed and workout some noticeable results may take up to six weeks.

The Competitive Edge

If you are the least bit competitive you will relate to this clip from VERSUS.  I believe our nations competitive environment has made us a world leader in virtually every category.  My concern now is that we are loosing our competitive edge.  So how has this happened?  Like any issue there is no clear singular cut cause.  A combination of factors contribute to this soft environment.  I know that in my lifetime,  I noticed a change in how competition was regulated when the boys participated in youth sports.  Lots of participation trophies, hugs after the games and a clear agenda to make everyone ‘feel good’ about the experience.  Physical Education programs have been watered down or eliminated. No scores, no clear winner, no touching. ~ No competition.  No exposure to competition leads to complacency.  As we all know, this isn’t the real world. Every day the best competitor comes out on top. Competition is not only healthy it is necessary.

Would The Blackmail Diet Work?

Wake up one morning and realize that your freshman 10 has over the years ballooned into an ugly 70 pounds of lard.  You’ve tried everything from the POW diet to Power Walking with no permanent change. What do you do? Well if you are John Bear you write a contract with your lawyer.

Mr. Bear, determined that weight loss challenges have more to do with psychological issues than food or training (I’m not sure I agree) looked to the leverage gained by writing a contract and putting his money on the line.

So he comes up with a plan: he signs a contract with a lawyer and puts $5,000 in escrow (i.e., at the mercy of the lawyer and completely out of his control). The contract states that if in a year’s time he doesn’t lose 70 lbs, the lawyer is legally obliged to give all the money to the American Nazi Party. Well, of course, for most sane people that’s an entirely unacceptable outcome, and sure enough a year later he had lost the full 70 pounds.

In my opinion, the value one places on the item at risk would weigh mightily on the success of the contract.  I’ve been personally part of an unsuccessful transformation that cost $30,000.00 to execute.  At the end of 30 days this individual was still morbidly obese and downed gallons of ice cream every evening. To this overweight individual, money was no object.  It’s value was not high enough to leverage the result.

Regardless it’s an interesting perspective and offers yet another potential method in the quest to lean out America.

A Better Decision

I can’t overstate how happy I am to have joined your program — I consider it literally one of the 3-4 best decisions of my life (if only I’d made it sooner!). I can count on one finger the number of activities for which I will happily rise at 4 a.m. almost every day, and that’s because the one hour I spend at Boot Camp Fitness /CrossFit Kansas City is easily the most productive of the day. In roughly six months, the benefits I have seen are countless and even transcend the significant fitness gains. Thanks for being the driving force of this enterprise — you are making a lot of people’s lives a lot better.

-Scott Worthington

Scott was one of our winners from the most recent Paleo Resolution challenge and now has the rectus abdominis to show for the effort. He not only looked better in his post Paleo challenge photos, his work capacity took a nice little bump for the better.  I didn’t want MENS HEALTH editors to raid our photos so I went with his corporate look instead. He’s a great addition to our 0500 advance group.~ Coach Rut

$6000.00 in the Bank

I tell my friends that I am addicted to Boot camp Fitness/CrossFit Kanas City- that is the only way I can explain to them why I get up at 4:30 AM for 5 days a week to go work out.  I LOVE IT! Boot Camp Fitness / CrossFit Kansas City is too general for the program that Coach Rut does. I have done several other boot camps but none can compare to this.

I am 42 years old and I am certainly in better shape now than when I was in my 30′s and probably even when I was playing competitive sports. I grew up playing competitive soccer and continued to play in college and after. Many years and 3 kids later my body simply did not respond to my old traditional ways of working out and getting in shape. If I put on weight I could always go run or go to the gym and quickly maintain my body weight.

Something happens to women after they turn 40 and that becomes harder. I had set personal goals to keep in shape, I always felt like if I had something to work towards it would keep me going, I have run a marathon and done 2 triathalons but still even after the last triathalon (2008) I worked very hard but I still did not lose weight or feel like my body was in shape. At 5’6″ my weight usually hovered between 130 and 135 which I was ok with- I could eat what I wanted and maintain this but I was not happy with how my body looked, how my clothes fit. I worked out all the time but never could lose weight. Then my weight started creeping up- I was not able to even maintain that weight anymore. I didn’t even want to weigh myself because I knew it would be bad.

Finally when I went to the doctor (and you have to get on the scale) the scale read 147 that was a huge shock!I felt like this was now out of my control so what did I do? I went promptly to the plastic surgeon to see about liposuction……there were many excuses (of course all were not related to myself and my actions).I can’t lose weight, I don’t know why, blah, blah, blah. The only thing that kept me from doing it was the fact that I could not afford $6,000.

In March 2010, I was down at the sprint center watching KU basketball and ran into a former soccer teammate from high school, we chatted and she and another friend were talking about this Boot Camp Fitness /CrossFit Kansas City, thing they were doing and how they loved it. So I decided to give it a try.

I started at 3 days a week for 3 months. After the first month I saw some results, really enjoyed the workouts, they were challenging, different and I felt like my whole body was getting worked out. I wanted quicker results so I jumped up to 5 days a week and then was hearing people talk about the Paleo diet. The summer Paleo challenge came up and I decided to try that out. That is when things really started to change for me, I could see my body changing and pretty quickly too.

As I was doing push ups one morning- Coach Rut pointed out that he could see my tricep muscle- I hadn’t noticed but there it was! I have lost 15 pounds and gone from a size 10 to size 6 in jeans. The workouts in combination with the Paleo diet is very powerful.

I used to take probably 4 Tylenol a day for headaches, I do not get headaches at all any more. No hunger swings either. Do not even crave or miss sugar or dairy products- in fact I was being treated for irritable bowel before trying paleo and cutting out dairy (or other things) has eliminated that for me as well.

My 16 year old daughter has noticed my transformation and is asking me now about what I am eating and is curious about how different foods affect your body. Both of my sons 14 and 10 have stopped drinking soda (voluntarily) and are making better food choices, just based on watching me make different food choices.

I guess if you are going to be addicted to something Rut’s Boot Camp / CrossFit program and the Paleo diet are probably good things to be addicted to. I am working towards still getting stronger – as a soccer player upper body strength was never my strong point and I am working towards moving up to the advanced class. Thanks Rut for helping me take control of my actions and therefore taking control of the way I eat, exercise and live my life. Oh yeah and saving me $6,000!

Grandma’s knees no more.

When Jennifer first called she gave me every indication that our relationship might last a grand total of four weeks.

She told me ‘she had her grandma’s knees’ and that her back was too weak to carry her 4 year old daughter.  The role of wife, mother of three, traveling business professional left little time for Jennifer leaving her exhausted and terribly  de-conditioned.

So off we started on improving everything top to bottom.  Strength and mobility and a powerful modification in sleep habits and nutrition. We closely monitored the details and handed out homework assignments.

Fast forward about 10 weeks later and we have a new women.  Dead lifting, squatting, pulling and pressing are no longer challenges unless we add weight.  Picking up that 4 year old  is a pleasure and not a pain. Her eldest daughter now looks forward to weekend conditioning sessions with mom. Down about 20 lbs her squat looks like a champ.  Jennifer has Grandma’s knees no more and we couldn’t be more proud of her.

More than looking good on the outside

The coaches spent Thursday evening with the most amazing lady.  Maura Coleman-Murray did great work with her camera taking photos for this new website and blog.  This gal is a professional.  Maura started with us last Spring to up her GPP before shifting into triathlon prep mode.  She’ll tell you she leaned out a bit and is approaching fighting form.

Personally, I’m the family joke when it comes around to holidays and picture taking.  I come by it honestly. Dad never took a picture that didn’t resemble Eeyore from Pooh.

While this crew looks pretty good on the outside, they are even more impressive under the hood.  Athletic participation that includes high school to Division I college athletics.  Coaching experience that includes elementary school sports, high school, college, international and Olympic level competitors. All are still competing as masters in sports ranging from triathlon to weightlifting.  This isn’t an option it’s a requirement of employment.

All organically grown they have a connection to me from my past or started with me as clients. A critical distinction. They know it’s not just important to talk the talk but to walk the walk.  We are authentic from the front door to the back door.

All this is why its easy for me to say we have the best the Metro has to offer.
